Point of Sale terminal

We'll start our tour with the point-of-sale (POS) terminal. Accessible through the Sales Assistant's Menu the POS terminal provides a means by which to quickly and easily serve customers. Again, ease of use is paramount; not only does it reduce training times (and therefore costs) for new staff but it also means that customer transactions can be processed smoothly.

UPDATE : Those wanting to minimise transaction processing time may want to consider the use of touch screen based point-of-sale terminals. A touchAssistance module is available for SimplEPOS which provides touch screen support for the application.

Sales are quickly processed using a product's barcode or PLU code. (A PLU code is a Product LookUp code that you can assign to a product yourself; ideal for products without a barcode). You can also select a product by doing a quick search of the stock database; ideal for heavy goods which are turned with the barcode hidden or when a barcode is unreadable or missing.

As transactions are processed the transaction details are displayed on the customer pole display (if fitted). A quick key press displays the visit balance to the customer.

Tendering payment is easy; simply select the payment method on the keyboard (CASH, CHEQUE, CARD or VOUCHER) and enter the amount being tendered. The system kicks open the cash drawer (if fitted), displays the amount of any change and gives the option of printing a receipt.

VOID, OVERRING and DISCOUNT credits allow scanned goods to be voided, the price of a sale to be adjusted and staff/customer discounts to be issued. Using the lock on the POS keyboard, access to these facilities can be restricted to (for example) the store manager or a supervisor should you want that extra level of security.

With direct access to the stock database from the POS terminal the user can easily check on a product's availability and/or price, either by searching for the product by name or using the product's barcode/PLU code:

As would be expected sensitive information such as cost price is hidden from the user in this 'view' of the database.

Till balance reports are available at the push of a button; both X-reads and Z-reads allow for quick and easy cash reconciliation at the end of the day or between shifts:
